For a few hours this past week, some of Lakota’s most devoted volunteers had to take a little time off.

They were invited to attend the annual Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit Awards ceremony to be recognized for generously donating their time and talents to Lakota.

Members of Lakota's Board of Education and Assistant Superintendent Robb Vogelmann were on stage to help honor these special volunteers. During the opening remarks, Vogelmann thanked the volunteers for the "hours, days, weeks and even years of volunteering. Today is about thanking you for partnering with Lakota to help students and families enjoy a truly enriched educational experience."

Principals and PTO presidents were on hand to introduce the top volunteers in each school building, and the organizers of the March Madness charity basketball tournament were also recognized for their district-wide volunteering efforts.

During the award presentations, comments like these were the norm.

“She’s our go-to person.”

“She is such a devoted volunteer at our building… and her kids have long moved on from our school!”

“He encourages young readers by dressing up as the very popular pirate, Captain Page Turner.”

“She’s the queen of signup genius (because she signs up so much)!”

The Barb Bossu Awards program is sponsored by the District Parent Council. The awards were established in 1990, and named after Barb Bossu, an enthusiastic parent volunteer and the Union Elementary PTA president at the time of her death. The Volunteer Spirit Awards commemorate her very special dedication to public education by honoring a volunteer each year at the district level and from every school in the Lakota district.
