Students show business leaders STEAM labHeritage Elementary recently hosted nearly 30 members of the business community participating in the West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance’s Leadership21 program. The visit was part of the group’s February focus on educational institutions serving our community.

Students across all grade levels at Heritage kicked off the visit with stations that demonstrated their work in the school’s STEAM lab. Business leaders visited with groups of students for an interactive look at projects that had forced students to expand their skills in problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork – all pillars of the STEAM labs popping up in Lakota’s elementary schools.

“It was reaffirming to hear from business people, across all different sectors, that the skills our students were demonstrating very much mirrored what they’re seeking from their own employees,” said Heritage Principal Missy Alexander. “And the students just love showing off what they’ve learned and answering questions about how they landed where they did.”

The group rounded out their visit with a roundtable discussion with Acting Superintendent Robb Vogelmann and a lesson in public school financing from Lakota Treasurer Jenni Logan.

“There’s so much more than meets the eye when it comes to school funding, so we never pass up an opportunity to pull back the curtain and help our community understand just how complex and sometimes unpredictable it can be,” Logan said.

“We have a great story to share for how far we’ve come in recent years to gain financial stability and still produce valuable opportunities for our students,” Logan continued. “We hope that’s a message our friends in the business community will help us share.”
