There was no ‘sleeping in’ for seven Hopewell Junior students last Saturday. Instead they got up extra early to head down to the University of Cincinnati to participate in the 31st Annual Academic Competition in Mathematics, better known as the Math Bowl.

For the first time, Hopewell Junior was one of the 27 areas schools that took part in the event that gives students the opportunity to work collaboratively in teams to explore interesting and challenging math problems.

Hopewell Junior math teachers Nichole Bruce and Joe Schorr were looking for a way to “stretch” their advanced students, and Gifted Support Advisor Patty Piron suggested trying the UC Math Bowl. All three teachers attended the event to support the students.

The seven Hopewell Junior students were divided into two teams, competing in the pre-algebra and algebra level. Each team worked as a group to solve two sets of problems. They were given an hour to study each set, devise mathematical solutions, and prepare written statements for the judges. The panel of judges then considered the efficiency, quality, and creativity of the solutions – and gave each team a rating of good, excellent or superior.
“When the students walked out of their testing rooms after the second hour of testing, they were all smiles and they commented how much fun it was,” said Bruce. “They had all positive comments to make about being allowed to talk to one another about the problems and their ability to discuss multiple approaches to each problem.”

Piron added, “I loved the relaxed and fun atmosphere that UC provided for the students. They all worked as teams and were scored not only on the correct answer, but on the strategies used to get the answer. Creative thinking was encouraged!”

The Hopewell Junior teams earned a superior and excellent rating from the judges. Bruce said, “Our students are consistently challenged with real-world problems in class, so they were prepared to apply the concepts to the competition problems. We will definitely participate in the bowl again. It was a great opportunity to represent Hopewell Junior and allow for students and teachers to work together outside of school.”

Eleven students from Lakota West's Mu Alpha Theta club (math honor society) also took part in the UC Math Bowl; two teams participated in the level 1 (calculus) competition and one team in level 2 (algebra 2 and geometry). Math teacher Victoria Croswell accompanied students. The level 2 team earned a good rating, and the level 1 teams received an excellent rating from the judges.
