
In addition to passing all parts of the ninth grade proficiency tests (visit Ohio Graduation Test), a student must earn 21 Carnegie Units of Credit, including the following:

Criteria: Diploma with Honors
Each school district shall award the Diploma with Honors to any student graduating prior to September 15, 2001 who: successfully completes the high school curriculum or individualized education program developed for the student by the high school; demonstrates at least a ninth-grade level of literacy and basic competency on all ninth-grade proficiency tests; and meets the criteria for honors provided below.
The student who completes the college preparatory curriculum in high school shall meet at least seven of the following eight criteria: 1. earn four units of English; 2. earn three units of mathematics, including at least Algebra I, Algebra II, and geometry; 3. earn three units of science, including at least one unit in a foundational science with an emphasis in biology and one unit of chemistry; 4. earn three units of social studies; 5. earn either three units of one foreign language or two units each of two different foreign languages; 6. earn one unit of fine arts; 7. maintain an overall high school grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale up to the last grading period of the senior year; and 8. obtain honors marks on all five parts of the twelfth grade proficiency tests or obtain a composite score of 27 on the ACT or 1210 on the SAT.

The student who completes the college preparatory curriculum in high school shall meet at least nine of the following ten criteria: 1. earn four units of English; 2. earn three units of mathematics, including at least Algebra I, Algebra II, and geometry; 3. earn three units of science that develop the concepts for physical, life, and earth and space sciences; 4. earn three units of social studies; 5. earn either three units of one foreign language or two units each of two different foreign languages; 6. earn one unit of fine arts; 7. earn one unit of business/technology; 8. earn two additional units of any of the above (1-7); maintain an overall high school grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale up to the last grading period of the senior year; and 9. obtain honors marks on all five parts of the twelfth grade proficiency tests or obtain a composite score of 27 on the ACT or 1210 on the SAT.
