2021-2022 Staggered StartIn an email to parents and guardians, Superintendent Matthew Miller shared the following message regarding Lakota's plans to begin the 2021-2022 school year on a staggered start.

Dear Lakota Parents & Guardians,

While we are eager for a more normal start to the new school year without some of last-year’s restrictions, there are some practices that we will continue because they worked exceptionally well. One of those is the staggered start.

Similar to last year, students in grades 1-12 will begin the year over a two-day period based on the first letter of their last name. The positive feedback we received from both parents and staff about beginning the year this way was also accompanied by requests to continue this practice this fall.

Among other reasons, last year’s staggered start was intended to put teachers and students in a smaller group setting and accelerate relationship building. Overwhelmingly positive teacher and staff feedback suggested that this model did, in fact, facilitate staff and student connections. Strong relationships continue to be a cornerstone of Lakota’s educational experience and are the foundation for more personalized learning. This is especially important this year, as many students will be returning to in-person learning for the first time since March 2020.

Please note that for our kindergartners, phase-in days will occur over three days. Our youngest learners in preschool will not participate in phase-in days.

All Lakota students, which includes those attending in-person or virtually, will begin the 2021-2022 school year according to the following staggered schedule:

Preschool:

There will be no phase-in days for preschool students. The first day for all preschool students will be Wednesday, Aug. 25.

Kindergarten:

Kindergarten Experience Phase-in Days for all kindergartners will occur over three days:

  • Only last names A-H will attend school on Thursday, Aug. 19

  • Only last names I-P will attend school on Friday, Aug. 20

  • Only last names Q-Z will attend school on Monday, Aug. 23

  • No kindergarten students will attend school on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

  • The first day that all kindergarten students will attend together will be Wednesday, Aug. 25.

Grades 1-12:

Only last names A-L will attend school on Wednesday, Aug. 18.

Only last names M-Z will attend school on Thursday, Aug. 19.

All students will attend school together on Friday, Aug. 20.

To reiterate, this schedule applies to both in-person and virtual learners. Families with students who have different last names and would like their students to attend school on the same day should inform their child’s homeroom teacher of their preferred day once schedules are released in August.

Please be on the lookout for an email communication next week sharing Lakota’s Back-to-School Hub on the district website. Here you will find information about bus schedules, menus, school supplies, teacher assignments and more.

Thank you for your continued support as we gear up for another great school year for our students and families.

Sincerely,

Matthew J. Miller

Superintendent
