At Lakota Local Schools, the health, safety and well-being of our students, staff and community are our top priorities. With the recently elevated discussion regarding the novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the news, we want to take a moment to reinforce preventive safety measures and reference our process and communications.

How is Lakota making decisions?

We continue to work closely with the Butler County Health Department to stay up to date with concerns and illness trends in our area. We are also closely monitoring the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for updates. With the increasing number of COVID-19 cases being reported, we are following guidelines and recommendations from the State of Ohio and the Ohio Health Department. Thank you for your patience as we navigate this rapidly changing situation.

What is the impact on upcoming school events?

In today’s press conference, Governor DeWine announced that the State is not recommending the closure of K-12 schools at this time. However, he and the Ohio Department of Health strongly recommended limiting social contact and large group gatherings.

Under this recommendation, Lakota Local Schools has made the following decisions:

  • All overnight field trips, both in-state and out-of-state, through April 13 will be cancelled.

  • School events, such as concerts and plays, that invite large numbers of parents and community members into our schools through April 13 will be postponed. We will evaluate opportunities to reschedule these events in the future.

  • We will continue to follow the recommendations of the Ohio High School Athletic Association and adjust schedules as needed.

  • Extra-curricular meetings and practices will continue at this time.

  • All high school internships scheduled to take place over spring break will be cancelled.

  • All external rentals beginning March 16 through March 31 will be cancelled. This will be reevaluated at the end of the month.

We understand that there are upcoming trips planned for our students after April 13. We will continue to monitor the recommendations of the health department and CDC in order to make informed decisions that are in the best interest of our students.

What about spring-break travel?

If you will be traveling during spring break, we ask that you please monitor the CDC travel advisories. Currently, travelers to Italy, Iran, China, and South Korea must self-quarantine for 14 days when arriving back in the United States. The CDC now recommends that travelers, particularly those with underlying health issues, defer all cruise ship travel. Please visit the CDC’s website for more information about travel.

Where can I find more information about the novel Coronavirus?

Please visit our website for resources on how to talk to children about COVID-19 as well as links to the CDC and other information.

What can I do to stay healthy?

Please take the extra precautions that are recommended by the CDC, such as hand washing, covering a cough or sneeze with a tissue, and staying home when you are sick.

What if Lakota has to close?

Lakota Local Schools announced on Monday that it will conduct a remote learning exercise. On Friday, March 13, students at Lakota Local Schools will not report to class, but instead will continue their learning remotely from home. All Lakota staff will report to their buildings and use this day to reflect on what adjustments need to be made to allow for continued learning for all students during a possible extended closure.

These decisions have not been made lightly, but in the best interest of the safety of our students and staff. We appreciate your support and patience during these unusual circumstances.
