The Singing Thunderhawks performed in concerts and were judged by professional musicians and college professionals from across the nation. Choirs from throughout the US were represented at the three-day event.

That’s not the only good news for the choirs as five of the school’s choirs received “superior” ratings at the district OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) event, then went on to earn “superior” ratings at the state competition. According to choir director Becky Huddilston, that may be a record.

“I know this is the first time in Lakota East Vocal Department history that five groups have qualified for OMEA state and also received superior ratings,” she explains. “We have had 5 qualify before but did not get a full superior sweep. This is only the second time in school history that all choirs qualified and got to perform at the state level.”

In regard to the Disney World trip, she states, “This is our sixth trip to Florida for the annual event, yet it is still so exciting for the students and their parents. All students participated in a workshop hosted by Disney that featured a wide range of fields. The classes concentrated not only on performing, but also on auditioning, sound and video engineering, business practices followed by Disney, and opportunities at the park and at Disney University."

The trip is fully funded by choir students and their parents.
