Two Early Childhood Schools Earn Both All A and Overall A Award from State

Momentum Award 2019Lakota Local Schools, including five individual schools within the district, has received the Ohio Department of Education’s Momentum Award for 2019. Additionally, two schools received both the All A Award and Overall A Award.

This annual recognition is given to districts or schools for exceeding expectations in student growth for the year. In order to receive the Momentum Award, a school or district must have received A’s on all Value-Added measures on the state report card. In addition, winners of the award must also have at least two Value-Added subgroups of students, including gifted, lowest 20% in achievement and students with disabilities. Lakota is one of only 48 districts in the State to receive this distinction.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Lakota has earned this award. Endeavor Elementary, Freedom Elementary, Lakota East High School, and Lakota West High School are receiving the notable recognition for the third time and Independence Elementary for the second.

“Receiving the Momentum Award from the Ohio Department of Education is a testament to the commitment of our teachers, staff and students,” said Keith Koehne, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Lakota. As reported at the release of the 2018-2019 state report card results, Lakota’s overall ‘A’ for progress measures the growth that all students made in the last year, based on their past performance.

In a statement announcing the 2019 Momentum Award recipients, State Board of Education President Laura Kohler said, “The students, teachers, administrators and staff honored today are shining examples to peers and colleagues around Ohio. We are both encouraged and challenged by the example of excellence they are setting.”

Only 50 schools in the State of Ohio have received the All A Award, with 209 receiving the Overall A Award. Two early childhood schools in Lakota have earned both. The All A Award is given to schools or districts that have earned an A on all of the state report card measures. The Overall A Award acknowledges districts or schools earning an overall grade of A. Liberty Early Childhood School has earned this honor for the second time, and Heritage for the first.

Superintendent Matthew Miller is proud of the district’s performance. "Lakota Schools provides a future-ready, student-centered learning experience for every single child," he said. “This is not only our mission statement, but what we strive to do every day. I am proud of our dedicated teachers and staff who are using personalized learning to engage their students. I am very happy to see seven of our schools being recognized at the state level for the hard work being done in our classrooms.”
