Matthew MillerThe Lakota Board of Education plans to take action at a special meeting this evening on the employment of Mr. Matthew Miller as the next superintendent to help lead Ohio’s eighth largest public school district serving about 16,500 students.

“Mr. Miller repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to using innovation and community partnerships as a means for maximizing student opportunities in a fiscally-conscious manner,” said Board President Ben Dibble. “We heard these same themes over and over again from our staff and community feedback sessions. His collaborative leadership style will help take the great talent we already have all around Lakota to the next level.”
The board began the search process in September by hiring K-12 Business Consulting Inc. as a consulting firm to help guide the board through this process and encourage educational leaders to apply for the position. The board then held listening sessions where community members, business leaders and staff could share what characteristics they were looking for in the next leader. In addition, all stakeholders had the opportunity to share input with the board online, ultimately shaping a candidate profile.

Seventeen educational leaders from across the Midwest applied for the position and eight were given first round interviews. This step not only included an interview with the board, but also a session with a cross-section of 24 community leaders including parents, staff, business partners and residents who provided feedback to the board. The pool was narrowed to two candidates who returned for second round interviews with the board on February 9.

“This search was designed to be an intense and competitive process that would ultimately keep Lakota moving in the right direction academically and financially,” said Dibble. “Following more than a dozen community input sessions and hundreds of completed questionnaires, our search provided us with a top-notch pool of candidates that made this a very difficult decision. Ultimately, we decided that Mr. Miller best met the qualities identified in our candidate profile and developed with community and staff input.”

Mr. Miller’s superintendent experience spans 12 years, nearly five of which he’s spent most recently at Mentor Public Schools. He offers 17 years of administrative experience, serving as both a principal and director of student services and instruction before becoming a superintendent. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of Cincinnati. Most recently, he completed the Leadership Institute of Superintendents at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Among his recent accolades is his inclusion on the National School Boards Association’s “Top 20 to Watch” in the nation. He was also selected to present at the White House for the #GoOpen initiative on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Education Technology.

“We are confident that Mr. Miller brings to Lakota the best combination of qualities and experience to help Lakota secure its position as a district that provides great opportunities to our students at a great value to our community,” Dibble said.

Mr. Miller is expected to begin his role as superintendent on an interim basis beginning June 15 with an official start date of Aug. 1. The board will convene for a special meeting on February 10 at 5 p.m. to vote on his employment and contract.
