COVID CornerNow in its eighth week of in-person learning, Lakota Local Schools continues to follow the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Butler County Health Department (BCHD). Safety protocols continue to be adjusted as needed in order to help stop the spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

When a student or staff member is showing symptoms of COVID-19, or has tested positive, they must begin to isolate immediately. Any siblings or family members in the district must begin to quarantine at the end of the day.

Isolation refers to a person who is displaying symptoms of COVID-19. A person who is isolated may return to school after 10 days as long as they have seen significant improvement in their symptoms and are fever-free without the assistance of medicine for at least 24 hours. They may return to school sooner if they have received an alternate diagnosis by a physician or a negative COVID test, symptoms have improved and they have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medicine. A doctor’s note must be provided to school.

Quarantine refers to someone who has been identified as being in close contact with a positive, or suspected, case of COVID-19. Close contact is defined as being within six feet, with or without a face covering, for a total of 15 minutes or more. Quarantine lasts for 14 days from the last date of exposure. This is because symptoms for COVID-19 can show anywhere between two and 14 days from the date of exposure. Furthermore, it is known that a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 can be contagious for up to two days before symptoms begin.

When a student displays two or more symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or a sudden onset of cough, shortness of breath or a new loss of taste or smell, the parents will be notified and asked to pick their student up from school. The nurse will speak with the child and their teachers to begin to identify close contacts in the event that the student eventually tests positive for COVID-19. These procedures follow guidance the district has received from the BCHD.

The district takes all precautions to keep students who are displaying symptoms of COVID-19 separated from other students and staff members. Our schools appreciate the cooperation and promptness of parents in picking up their students.

As Lakota continues with in-person learning and extracurricular activities, please remind your students to follow our safety protocols to help stop the spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19):

- Washing hands with soap and water regularly or using hand sanitizer when necessary; and
-
Maintain physical distancing of more than six feet whenever possible;
-
Wearing a mask or neck gaiter when in school or out in public.

When it is not possible to stay more than six feet apart, such as in a classroom, wearing a face covering is even more important. Remember to perform the daily health assessments and if your student is showing symptoms associated with COVID-19, please keep them home.
