Whether students are learning virtually or in-person, parents across the district are asking these questions. Parents need to know how to use technology platforms and resources like these to be able to support their students, and Lakota is making that much easier with the launch of its Parent Technology Zoom Sessions.

Each week through October, Lakota’s innovation specialists are hosting zoom sessions covering the most-requested topics for grades K-2, 3-6, 7-8 and 9-12.

During remote learning in the spring, the innovation specialists saw that teachers and students needed help with technology, but so did parents. When plans for the Virtual Learning Option began, these teacher leaders came up with the idea for the parent technology sessions.

“We want families to feel empowered to help support their students’ learning at home whether they are in-person students working on homework or they are VLO students working at home every day,” said Innovation Specialist Tiffany Rexhausen who organized the launch of the sessions and heads up those for families in grades 7-8. “In the long run, I also think this will help bring our learning community together as we invite them ‘in’ (digitally) to learn more about technology-related skills and standards that the students are learning.” She added that these skills are an important part of the curriculum and what students do every day, and that the skills can also transfer into many other areas for both students and their families.

The sessions are based on the needs at each grade level. For example, families in K-2 work with Seesaw so their first session was on that platform, while sessions for grades 3-6 will cover topics such as submitting assignments in Canvas and organizing your Google Drive. The innovation specialists are determining each week’s topic based on input from teachers and parents.

“In the grades 3-6 sessions, our turnout has been great! It really illustrated the need for families to learn more about how they can be active participants in their student’s educational experience,” said Innovation Specialist Kim Carlson.

“While we’ve gotten great feedback about the sessions themselves, having a consistent resource available for parents to access when needed was also important to us,” Carlson added. Whenever possible, sessions are archived so that families can access the information at any time.
