Snow Days Will Continue This Year

With December comes winter weather and potential snow days. Lakota Local Schools will continue its practice of using calamity days for all students, both in person and those enrolled in the Virtual Learning Option, should it be deemed necessary to close or delay school due to inclement weather.

Since the start of the school year, Lakota students and staff have participated in three remote learning practice days should the district need to shift to remote learning due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, at this time, district leaders will continue to use calamity days in the case of inclement weather. “Our students and staff have done a great job shifting to remote learning during our practice days,” said Superintendent Matthew Miller, referring to the three district-wide remote learning days since the start of the school year. “However, shifting to remote learning for an unplanned snow day creates an equity issue for some of our students,” he continued.

In preparation for the remote learning practice days, students in primary grades were able to borrow a district-owned device or wireless hotspot if needed. In the event of an unplanned calamity day, these families may not have access to the necessary technology to complete online assignments. “We will carefully monitor the number of calamity days used this winter,” said Miller. “If it appears that the winter will be a challenging one, weather-wise, and we may approach our allotted number of calamity days per the State, remote learning may be implemented.”

Students are required to be in school for a specific number of hours each year, per the Ohio Department of Education and the State of Ohio. The number varies by grade band:

- 910 hours for students in full-day kindergarten through Grade 6; and
455 hours for students in half-day kindergarten;
1,001 hours for students in Grades 7-12.

While Lakota exceeds the number of instructional hours each year, the district has already used several hours by moving the first day of school and implementing a staggered start.

Masks Dos and Don’ts

All students and staff are required to wear either a face mask or neck gaiter if they are within six feet of another person, except when at lunch. Per the Centers for Disease Control, masks with exhalation valves or vents are not recommended. These types of masks allow for the transmission of COVID-19 to others.
