Written Education Plan letters and FAQ

(posted 10/21/21)

The annual WEP or No WEP (Written Education Plan) letter is being disseminated through the buildings. The Ohio Department of Education requires all school districts to send the notification to families with gifted students. The letter notifies families of the student’s area of gifted identification and if the student will receive a WEP for the school year**. Please see our FAQ to help answer any questions you may have:. ** If your student is identified gifted in reading only, and in ELA Plus or 6th grade Advanced Language Arts, there was an error on the Gifted Service WEP letter. It is a new service for us this year and the change had not been updated in our system used for the creation of letters. We are excited to offer services to our gifted readers and apologize for the incorrect information on the letter. All students in grades 3-6 identified gifted in reading will receive a WEP (Written Education Plan). We appreciate your support as we move through these changes and provide more gifted services for our students.

Welcome to Gifted Services

The Lakota Local School District believes in the appropriate education of all its students. Lakota staff adhere to several policies related to the advancement of students, including gifted identification, acceleration, early entrance to school, as well as early graduation.

While gifted services are not mandated in Ohio, Lakota believes in providing a quality and rigorous education to all students. Through a large menu of opportunities, advanced students may qualify and participate in services designed to meet their unique learning needs. This section of the website provides an overview of Lakota’s services and criteria for placement.

We aim to meet the needs of our gifted students through a wide continuum of services that include:

  • An advanced curriculum.
  • Use of differentiated instructional strategies.
  • Placement in specific gifted programs for gifted students.
  • Honors and advanced placement classes for secondary students.

The type of service and programming provided to gifted students depends on recent assessment data and what is determined to be most appropriate in meeting an individual student’s needs.
